Come explore Paris, France with illustrator and travel guide author Betsy Beier. During our art journal workshop in Paris, Betsy will lead you on a week-long creative wanderlust adventure. Having lived in Paris, Betsy is eager to share with you les grands boulevards and les petites ruelles. With her own style she’ll reveal how the stories and long history of the city intertwine with modern everyday life.

Whether you are a self-proclaimed non-artist or seasoned sketcher, Betsy Beier’s approachable teaching style and daily lessons will guide you. Her art journal workshop in Paris will provide a step by step process of making your own creative journal. Inspired by our travels, it will be filled with watercolor sketches, writing, photographs, collages and more.
Daily lessons will be held while out and about. Locations may be a picnic in the famous Luxembourg Gardens or while taking a break in the shade along the Seine or a small undiscovered square. After a short discussion, some simple demonstrations and loads of creative prompts, we you be invigorated to create with fresh eyes and a curious mind.
By the end of the week, you will not only leave with a one-of-a-kind, personal creative journal (filled with personal Parisian stories, sketches, photographs, collages and adventures) but also a new community of like-minded creative wanderlust adventurers.

Itinerary
Art Journal Workshop in Paris, France

Day 1
Welcome: Our art journal workshop in Paris begins mid-afternoon on the first day. To begin, we will spend time meeting one another and talking about our days ahead. Then we will set off for an orientation walk of the neighborhood. Along the way we will stop at one of our favorite art supply stores. Afterwards, you can find a bite to eat with the group or maybe tuck in early after a busy day of travel.

Day 2
Around the Seine: Spend the morning with the works of Monet, Renoir, Degas and more. Stroll through the Musee D’Orsay and its collection of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist greats. Afterward, join the Parisians for a stroll through the Tuileries Garden. Then Betsy will lead class in the Jardin du Palais Royal. Next, after passing through the Louvre courtyard with its famous glass pyramid we will visit one or two boutique art supply stores.
Day 3
Belleville: Today our art journal workshop will be led by a local artist on a street art tour through the Belleville neighborhood. One of the highlights of our time, you’ll learn about a subculture of today’s art scene as well as discover a vibrant and diverse neighborhood. Afterward join Betsy for class at the famous Père Lachaise Cemetery. Lovely on its own, Père Lachaise is also the resting place of Jim Morrison and many other notable figures.

Day 4
Easy Eiffel Day: Start the day as you wish. Sketch at a cafe while enjoying a café and croissant. Or maybe visit a destination not on our itinerary. (Paris has so many from which to choose!) In the afternoon we will set off for class with a view of the iconic Eiffel Tower. In the evening our river cruise will take in the glow of Paris as the sun sets. It is the most beautiful way to see the City of Light at night.

Day 5
Latin Quarter and Saint Germain: The day begin’s with an appointment at a boutique art store (and possibly a little retail therapy.) Then we will visit the charming Rue Mouffetard Market, still in place since medieval times. On the way we will see the dazzling Notre Dame, newly opened after the terrible fire that tore through it in 2019. Finally, Betsy will lead class from a shady spot in Parisians’ favorite open space: the Luxembourg Gardens.
Day 6
Market Day!: An early start brings us to the Old and Used Book Market. It is a treasure trove of printed material of all shapes and sizes. Next, spend the remainder of the morning exploring the Puces de Vanves Flea Market. There, vintage jewelry, paper, linen, and other goodies await your discovery. Fill your sketchbook with the characters and catch all of the market. Betsy will lead a class inspired by all you find there.
Day 7
Montmartre: Our sketchbook journal workshop would not be complete without a visit to Montmartre. Follow winding streets to Sacre Coeur and Place du Tetre. You’ll find inspiration at the Musée Montmartre and the serene Renoir garden. Afterwards, refresh with a light lunch and a sip of wine (just like the Impressionists did!). Then we’ll pay a visit to a stunning fabric market and an eclectic antique store.
Day 8
Departures: After a delicious breakfast, we bid farewell to our art journal workshop friends until the next time. No formal activities are planned for this day. You may depart whenever it suits your schedule.

Paris, France’s capital, is a major European city and a global center for art, fashion, gastronomy and culture. Its 19th-century city-scape is crisscrossed by wide boulevards and the River Seine. Beyond such landmarks as the Eiffel Tower and the 12th-century, Gothic Notre-Dame cathedral, the city is known for its cafe culture and designer boutiques.
