Art Vacations
Painting Workshops in Europe
These are painting-focused programs, built around watercolor, gouache, or other painting techniques depending on the artist-teacher. Our watercolor painting vacations pair daily instruction with sketchbook work or loose sheets, building toward the same travel journal format that runs through every Blue Walk program. The way light moves across a hillside, the color of the water at a specific hour, the texture of a weathered stone wall—these become part of your practice in a way that working from photographs never captures. Work on a terrace overlooking the sea. Paint in a garden behind a medieval church. Let the destination set your palette.
A Looser Kind of Plein Air
Some guests know this as plein air painting: working directly from the landscape rather than a photo. Our painting workshops are a looser version of the tradition. No easels, no fuss, just a sketchbook or a block of paper and whatever's in front of you. Your artist-teacher will guide you through composition and technique, helping you learn to work quick and loose, capturing a scene before the moment (or the light) moves on.
What to Expect
Our painting workshops in Europe are active vacations built around daily instruction, with plenty of room left for walking, wonderful meals, and the kind of discovery that makes a destination feel personal. Many guests find that the combination of creative focus and active travel is what makes these programs so restorative.
Walking
Walking is part of every painting program. Most days include two to four hours on foot, along coastal paths and through historic centers, pausing wherever the afternoon's subject presents itself: a piazza filled with people, the last of a shared bottle of wine, a view across the bay, whatever's in front of you.
A Note on Pace
We walk together at a group pace, with some flexibility to adjust the route as the day unfolds. If fitness or mobility is a concern, our FAQ has more detail on what to expect.

Every Skill Level Welcome
From first-time painters to experienced watercolorists, these programs are built for growth at every level. Watercolor painting vacations with The Blue Walk are as much about the journey as the art you create along the way.
