Art Walk Interview with Jeff Hirsch
Why do you do what you do?
Mostly, I love capturing the beauty of the world with my camera and helping other photographers to do the same with theirs. After all, it’s such a pleasure to take photographers to amazing places in the world and help them capture and bring home meaningful images.
How do you work? What is your teaching style?
My approach to photography is less about camera gear and more about story-telling and vision. Importantly, one is learning how to see the world in a more creative fashion. Essentially I focus on story-telling, composition, balance, framing, and being more receptive to the visual world around us.
What is your photography background?
I am a lifetime photographer with 47 years of experience behind the lens. I started at age 7 in my dad’s black & white darkroom, and I have been hooked ever since. In fact, I have been running photo tours all over the world and teaching photography for over a decade now. My wife Donna, daughter Caroline, and grandson Charlie are the pride and joy of my life and my favorite photographic subjects!
What inspires you?
Basically I am inspired by the beauty and wonder I see in the world. That and the desire to capture it and share it with others. Then they too might experience some of that same wonder in their own hearts and minds.
What attracts you about travel photography?
I enjoy getting outside of my own cultural and environmental bubble to see the wider world. Correspondingly, photography is a great way not only to document the world, but to connect with its native people and cultures. In fact, I have found it is a way to bridge the physical and societal distances that separate us all.
Why do students attend a Jeff Hirsch course?
As a person with one foot in the world of art and the other in the world of science, I speak both languages. As such, I’ve gotten very good at doing “Geek to English” translation for creatives who want to learn how to use technology in the service of their art. In short, students love my courses because I can take complicated techniques and technology and explain them in plain English. Often I’ll use metaphors and other techniques they can wrap their brains around.
What have you learned from creating while you travel?
There is a magic in getting away from the everyday experience and seeing the world from a new point of view. Intrinsicly, creating as part of the travel experience more strongly connects me to what I am seeing. Firstly, it allows me to distill those experiences down to their essences. Then new experiences lead to new ways of seeing which lead to beautiful photographs.
