Artist Interview: Jill Badonsky
What inspires you?
Being in the moment, the little things, overcoming adversity, laughter, imagination, diversity, seeing new cultures, the freedom and transcendence possible in the creative process.
How do you work? What is your teaching style?
For my destination workshops I like to meet on Zoom even before we travel. This gives participants a chance to practice the techniques. Also, for some, it makes the process of writing and creating art on-site more enjoyable and less anxiety provoking. Using right brain techniques such as drawing with eyes closed, going fast, keeping the pen on the page and letting loose, I emphasize the need not to be perfect. In fact, I encourage imperfect art because it has more personality, mystery, and energy. Our voices are better able to emerge when we are not worried about being perfect.
I am a teacher first and artist second. So the enjoyment and skill development of my participants are my priority.
What attracts you about travel journaling?
Using both art and writing grounds people to make more enriching, lasting, and enjoyable connections with new sights and experiences. When rendering something in art, there is a deeper, more sustainable relationship to what we are seeing than snapping a photograph. The creative flow combined with the experience of being in a beautiful country is an unmistakable high and an amplification of the present moment.
Why do you do what you do?
I am a naturally curious individual who is continuously seeking to broaden my creative horizons. Driven by a sense of adventure and passion for my craft, I am dedicated to continually expanding my creative repertoire, both in terms of technique and medium. Whether I am working on a new piece or experimenting with different tools and materials, I am always open to the endless possibilities that lay ahead. I’m eager to embrace the unknown and challenge myself in new and exciting ways.
I have developed a unique approach to my creative pursuits – One that combines a deep understanding of technique with a willingness to experiment and explore. For me, there is no greater joy than unlocking new creative potentials and uncovering new paths to self-expression. I am committed to sharing that passion with others, inspiring them to embrace their own artistic journeys, and push themselves beyond their limits.
What is your background?
My background is in Art therapy, psychiatric occupational therapy, education, psychology, and 19 years in a creativity coaching model I designed and teach. I’m a self-taught artist and author/illustrator of three and a half books on creativity. I’m also an inspirational humorist meaning I’ve done many presentations, classes, and writing that both inspire and make people laugh. I’ve been teaching creativity retreats since 2004 including 11 years in Taos, New Mexico.
Why do students attend your courses? What will they get out of it?
The two main reasons I hear from those who have attended my classes are 1) For the freedom they feel from comparison, perfectionism, and self-doubt and 2) The fun, comradery, and laughter.
What have you learned from creating while you travel?
That art, writing, and mindfulness make a huge difference in the quality of travel. This is not only in the moment, but for the lasting memories that endure. And… traveling together in this way is a heck of a lot of fun.
