Sketchbook Art Journal Vacation in France

If you ask Koosje Koene, a sketchbook is the best travel companion. And drawing is absolutely the best way to document a trip. When traveling there are so many new impressions and experiences – and emotions too. When you draw, all your senses open up. By sitting down to sketch, you take it all in. You become present. Your memories remain vivid. You notice so much more than you ever could by snapping a photo. Through your pen and brush, you capture it all on the page. This is the main theme of your Art Walk France sketchbook art journal vacation.

During this workshop we will journey together and document it as we go. Koosje will teach how to take it in and not feel overwhelmed. We will approach it bit by bit. You will explore and play with line, color, and adding notes. It will be a fun, laughter-filled vacation of discovery both on the page and off. By the end of it you will have filled your sketchbook with memories. Each page will tell part of the story.

Day 1

We will gather at our charming, historic hotel in central Nice, France just blocks from the sea. First, we’ll have a meet-and-greet and program overview. Then, an orientation walk will help you get to know the neighborhood. Along the way we may sample some local specialties to get a taste of the region.

Day 2

We start the morning with a short stroll to Nice’s old town and famous weekly antique market. There, you’ll have free time to browse the eclectic stalls. Next, a walk brings us to some of the most iconic views of the Riviera from Castle Hill. Finally, the day ends with a delicious welcome dinner.

Day 3

After breakfast, a short train ride brings us to Beaulieu Sur Mer. From there we walk the sentier of Cap Ferrat to the sunny habor village of Villefranche Sur Mer. Stunning views are revealed around every turn of the path. A refreshing beverage enjoyed at a table by the sea never tasted so good.

Day 4

First, the sentier from Roquebrune begins with winding, oaklined trails and views of Monaco. Then the path opens to a sunny beachside promenade. After reaching Menton, a leisurely lunch and art class leaves time to enjoy this charming town. We will wander it’s lemon-lined lanes and perhaps have a little gelato.

Day 5

Today we truly experience the Riviera like the locals. After shopping at the bountiful Marché Forville open market in Cannes, we will take a short ferry to Île Saint-Honorat. There, on the quiet coast of an island sanctuary, we will enjoy a picnic of the season’s best offerings. Finally, a quiet walk among the vinyards and olive trees leads to our return ferry.

Day 6

On our last full day we traverse the sentier of Cap d’Antibes with its hidden coves and dramatic views. Then we walk the ramparts of this ancient fortress city and make our way through the narrow streets of its historic center. Get inspired like artists of old with an optional visit and tasting at the absinthe museum. End the day with a festive farewell dinner at a local bistro.

What is Art Walk France like?

Experience a sketchbook art journal vacation that is equal parts art program and tour. Travel the French Riviera by train and by foot. With an insider-guide leading the way, you will visit medieval village centers and walk locals-only coastal paths. And not from the distance of a passenger bus or surrounded by a crowd of tourists following a flag. Rather, at eye level and with a small group of friends. Become immersed in the sensory experience of travel. Feel what it is like to be part of a place, and not just pass through it on your way to somewhere else.

We will explore a region of the Cote d’Azur between Cannes and Menton. Centrally based in the city of Nice for all six nights, you’ll unpack only once. Every day begins with an energizing walk along a new section of beautiful Mediterranean coast. Our daily destinations may include a bustling open market, a remote island monastery, or a pastel-hued medieval village overlooking the sea. We will stop for sketchbook sessions along the way. You will practice traveling lightly and drawing in the moment. Creating is part of the journey.

Art Walk participants should be able to walk comfortably for an hour at a time at a leisurely pace. We will be walking on ungroomed trails, cobbled paths, sidewalks, pavement, and stairs. Some terrain may be uneven and rocky.

Solo travelers and single supplements

For our guests who are traveling solo... We offer a single supplement for an additional fee if you wish to guarantee a private room.

If you do not request a private room, you may share a twin room with another trip participant of the same sex (Roomshare). If you sign up and no Roomshare is available, a 50% single supplement will be due at final payment. However, if a roommate is found before your trip departs, you will be matched and the single supplement will be refunded.

Please note that a single supplement guarantees a private room. Whenever possible singles will be placed in the same room type as our double or twin rooms. However, European hotels often have smaller single rooms available at a lesser cost. If you would be interested in this option please inform us while booking.

Twin / Double Rooms

Please be aware twin beds in Europe may have very little or no space between beds. Also, instead of a king or queen mattress, double beds are often two adjoining twin mattresses made with double bedding.

Fitness

We provide a general description of our walks. It is your responsibility to know your own physical and medical condition with respect to the advisability of participating in a chosen trip. We suggest you prepare by doing some longer walks and (working up to) doing 1 hour of walking comfortably. Ideally, include walks with elevation change and stairs. (There are always stairs.)

As with any exercise program, we recommend you consult with your physician prior to your arrival regarding the suitability of a walking tour.

Many find walking sticks helpful on steep or uneven terrain. Before using them on a vacation, we strongly advise you be comfortable using walking sticks on familiar paths.

For additional information on these topics and more, please see our FAQ page.

Where In the World?

Our French Riviera vacations are based in Nice, France. Famous for it's perfect weather and seaside lifestyle, the region has a wealth of natural, cultural, and culinary riches. Our small group walking tours take advantage of the little traveled sentiers, or walking paths, that run along the coast. Our France walking tour will focus on the very best of the area as we explore between Cannes to the west and Menton on the Italian boarder to the east.

Blue Walk France walking tour vacation

The Nice International Airport is the most convenient for our programs. A tram runs between the airport and central Nice. This is by far the most economical and reliably fast way to bet to and from the airport.

For those who are interested, a fast train regularly travels between Paris and Nice. The journey takes about 5 1/2 hours.
