Sketchbook Art Workshop in Portugal

Rich culture, stunning natural beauty, and a friendly, laid back lifestyle. What’s not to love about Portugal? Our sketchbook workshop with Anne Leuck will spend a week based in the beachside, harbor town of Setúbal. From there we will explore the nearby trails and beaches of Arrábida Natural Park, considered some of the most beautiful beaches in Europe. Then, Lisbon’s dynamic art scene will come to life through a tour with a local street artist and a passionate fado show. Next the palaces and countryside of Sintra await. In the area in and around Setúbal, we will visit local artisans, enjoy locally produced cuisine, and visit an award-winning, family owned winery. Half-day walks and excursions still leave time for you to discover on your own. Our completely unique itineraries will reveal a less-traveled view of Portugal, far from the tourist crowds. You’ll return home refreshed, renewed, and inspired.

What to Expect

Sketchbook Art Workshop

Journaling while traveling offers the most unique way of fully engaging with a place, discovering details and beauty that might otherwise escape, unnoticed. In my teaching, I strive to foster a warm and welcoming environment for all students to see with new eyes, playfully express their creativity and hone their art making skills. We become more than just a group of travelers – we form friendships and become cheerleaders and sources of inspiration for one another. It is just as much an art adventure as a travel one!

In our sketchbooks, we’ll not only capture the beauty and culture of the places we visit but also document the story of our trip…it’s not just about what we see. Using all the senses, I will guide you in documenting the story of your trip, capturing the magical and silly moments, conversations, tastes, sights and sounds that might otherwise fade from memory. By doing so, you can share your journey with others when you return home and relive the incredible adventure through the pages of your travelog.

For me, nurturing a safe space for creativity is essential.  Alongside sharing my techniques and artistic process, I will address common fears related to drawing, using color, perfectionism, and celebrating your own unique style and creativity. The constant question of “Am I doing this right?” fades away, enabling you to explore your artistic potential without self-doubt.

The Take-home

At the end of your trip you will have a travelog recounting your unique experiences. From illustrated storyboard pages capturing your days through my signature process of combining words and images, to sketches employing my favorite drawing methods like blind contour, scribble and wash techniques. We will explore pattern, color, lettering, page layouts and even incorporate collage and haikus to add additional whimsy and individuality to your journal. While I provide journaling prompts and techniques, your journal is yours to fill. Whether you find inspiration in scenic landscapes, cityscapes, or café scenes, you’ll have numerous opportunities to immortalize your adventures in a unique and personal way.

Before Departure

Our journey begins with a pre-trip Zoom meeting to acquaint ourselves and offer you the option to share your work, even before we set off on our adventure. Additionally, I will provide you with my complimentary online sketch journaling self-study workshop: ‘Draw Your Heart Out’, introducing you to my process. If this sparks your interest, I would love for you to join me for a trip, where we will  immortalize our journey in a creative journal full of memories that you will cherish forever.

What to Expect

Travel and Touring

The city of Setúbal is located just 30 minutes south of Lisbon airport. Here, you will discover the warmth, beauty, and charm that has made Portugal one of Europe’s top destinations. Our art workshop vacations feature slow travel and soft adventure. During the walks, we will take in our surroundings and stop often for photos. A combination of local trains, buses, and private vans will shuttle our small group to each day’s walk. Our select, boutique hotel in the historic center will welcome you home after a day of discovery. Our designated art studio provides the space to immerse yourself during daily art classes.

What are the Walks Like?

Our Art Walk Portugal art workshop vacations features a variety of routes. Daily, we will enjoy trail walks along rustic gravel or dirt paths and urban strolls along paved sidewalks and cobbled streets.

Typical days average between 1-2 hours of walking including stops and breaks. To best enjoy our walks you should feel comfortable walking at least 2 miles in an hour. While Setubal’s center is wonderfully flat, most of the region is hilly. Be prepared for stairs and lots of them.

Moreover, walking on the coastal paths and strolling through beach-side promenades is a great way to enjoy leisurely conversations, rub elbows with local residents, and just appreciate being in the moment.

Inspired Art Classes, Unique Locations, and Authentic Experiences

Where in the World?

Located in southwestern Europe on the Iberian Peninsula, Portugal is bordered by Spain to the north and east and by the Atlantic Ocean to the south and west. The city of Setúbal, where our walking vacation is based, is in central Portugal near the Atlantic coast at the mouth of the Sado River. Lisbon, the country’s capital, is 30-60 minutes north of Setúbal depending upon traffic.

Setubal is connected to Lisbon by excellent public transport which includes express buses and regular train service and will be less than 10€ and takes about an hour. An Uber or private driver will be about 50-60€. The drive is about 35 minutes if there is not traffic.

Portugal Vacation Line Map 265x450

There is one international airport in Lisbon, the Humberto Delgado Airport (LIS). It is located about 5 miles north of the city center. LIS has two terminal buildings, situated a 1 km distance from each other. In general terms, terminal 1 is the major terminal of the airport, housing the vast majority of services and amenities and handling the bulk of flights. T2 supports low-cost european air carriers, such as Ryanair and EasyJet. If you’re flying from the US, even if you’ve passed through customs in another European airport, you’ll likely be landing in Terminal 1.

The other major airports in Portugal are the Faro International Airport (FAO) in the south and Porto’s Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport (OPO) in the north.

(For information on how to get from the Lisbon Airport to the Lisbon City Center, please refer to the Lisbon International Airport website.)

Walking Vacation in Portugal

Your place on a tour is secured once we have received and confirmed your deposit payment. Before the final payment date, a non-refundable deposit of $500 for walking vacations and $750 for art vacation workshops is required. After the final payment date, the entire tour amount must be received to hold a space on a program.

You may cancel for any reason up to 90 days prior to departure and your non-refundable deposit may be forwarded to a future tour. Any balance on your account will be returned. For complete details please see our Terms and Conditions.

Solo travelers and single supplements

For our guests who are traveling solo... We offer a single supplement for an additional fee if you wish to guarantee a private room.

If you do not request a private room, you will share a twin room with another trip participant of the same sex (Roomshare). When you sign up, if no Roomshare is available, a 50% single supplement will be included on your invoice and is due at final payment. However, if a roommate is found before your trip departs, you will be matched and the single supplement will be removed or refunded.

A single supplement guarantees a private room. Whenever possible singles will be placed in the same room type as our double or twin rooms.

Twin / Double Rooms

Please be aware twin beds in Europe may have very little or no space between beds. Also, for double beds, instead of a king or queen mattress, double beds are often two adjoining twin mattresses secured together and made with double bedding.

Walking is a part of this program. It is both a means of visiting locations and a way to immerse yourself in a place. Our scheduled walks are usually 1-2 hours long at a casual pace. We provide a general description of our walks here. It is your responsibility to know your own physical and medical condition with respect to the advisability of participating in a chosen trip. We suggest you prepare by doing at least 1 hour of walking several times per week, and a longer walk at least once per week. Ideally, include walks with elevation change and stairs. (There are always stairs.)

As with any exercise program, we recommend you consult with your physician prior to your arrival regarding the suitability of a walking tour.

Some of our guests find trekking poles helpful on steep or uneven terrain. In Europe they are quite common. Before using them on a vacation, please practice at home. We strongly advise you get comfortable using trekking  poles on familiar paths first.

For additional information on these topics and more, please see our FAQ page.
