What to Expect
Not only will you see all the sights this delightful city has to offer, but you will have the chance to walk and explore the splendor of the typical countryside by way of local trails and country roads. You will experience an area rich in artistic, cultural and culinary heritage. Among the many places you will discover are:
Civita di Bagnoregio (the Dying City)
We will walk to the ancient, crumbling, but very picturesque village of Civita di Bagnoregio, spectacularly situated on top of its small ridge surrounded by a ‘moonscape’ of eroding cliffs. Our local guide will share her rich knowledge of local history, culture, food and folklore. You will explore the winding medieval center with its tiny church and learn about the history of this unique place. Like a village from a fairy tale, the atmosphere is incredible! You will end your tour at a wonderful eatery with an olive oil tasting and a view of the valley below.
Etruscan Tomb Visit
This day’s adventures will delve into the sights and tastes of the verdant hillsides to the southwest of Orvieto. Our countryside walk will take in the beautiful scenery around the ancient Borgo of Porano. Here, close to Porano, there is one of the most important historical and archaeological sites in the Umbrian region, the Golini and Hescana Etruscan tombs. A private tour with the official local archaeologist to view the Hescana tomb will reveal its unique and rare secrets.
Estate Winery Visit
After the guided tour of the Tomb, we will take a short journey and enjoy a private winery tour on an ancient estate. The tour will include a wine tasting of several of their premium wines as well as an organic goat cheese tasting from a local, specialist producer. This unique, family-owned, artisan winery is run by a young, talented and innovative winemaker who will personally host our tour and provide a wonderfully informative commentary during the tastings.
Food Lovers Day Trip
Our walking tour in Umbria finale is a spectacular and delicious day of touring in both the Umbrian and Tuscan countryside. First we take the scenic road from Orvieto to Lake Bolsena, Europe’s second largest volcanic crater lake. From there we will enjoy a morning walk along the shoreline with its crystal clear waters. Then, through rural farmland and a few scenic villages, our transfer brings us to a truly unique family farm. Here we will indulge in a farm to table gourmet lunch in the truest sense.
An abundant antipasto buffet, followed by housemade pasta, main dishes and locally produced wines are your reward for a week of leisurely walking in the Umbrian countryside. Traditional, handmade, award winning, and organic, the cheeses and charcuterie offered here are all made on property. Experience passionate artisans, lovingly prepared food, and a most memorable meal followed by a tour of the sheep and goat milking process.
