Angela Fehr is so excited to share her watercolor workshop in Greece with a group of fellow watercolor lovers. Regardless of your skill level, together we will savor the beauty of the Greek isles through the belief in three basic ideas. First: beautiful process creates beautiful paintings. Second: every painting is growing our skills. And Third: there is freedom in painting from the heart.

Angela knows the challenges artists face often start in the mind. Together we’ll encourage each other to be brave and let go of self-criticism. Importantly, we’ll set the intention to use our brushes and sketchbooks to enrich our travel experience together.

Overview

Watercolor Workshop in Greece

Art Program

A plein air painting course is a full-immersion learning experience. Here artists challenge themselves to learn how to observe, edit and capture the essence of a scene quickly. You don’t need to feel overwhelmed. The simple act of pausing to paint is the best place to begin. Evenmore, the company of other artists brings camaraderie, community, and a spirit of adventure. The process is not only transformative. It can be incredibly joyful and fun.

This watercolor workshop in Greece is infused with equal parts travel and art. Our learning together will happen informally and as we go. We will explore beautiful Greece, stopping to paint, and take in the vistas provided by this amazing country. Each day Angela will demonstrate how to use what you have – the view, the tools, and the skills you’ve developed. From there you will build on what you’re seeing and learning day by day. As you learn to trust your instincts, you’ll find your balance between skill and intuition, which falls differently for every artist.

While touring, Angela will guide you in taking “visual notes” in watercolor with short sketches to sharpen your observation skills. We’ll document vignettes of our travels. When time and location allow, we’ll work to develop our studies further and plan how to paint the scene even more intentionally.

From Angela Fehr’s watercolor workshop in Greece, you’ll come home with more than photos. Your sketchbook travel journal will be full of explorations that will remind you of your days in Greece and our time together. Each day will include time to explore independently. Non-painting partners are welcome. There’s always enough adventure for everyone!

Travel and Touring

Athens (1 night)

Our Art Walk watercolor workshop in Greece begins in Athens with a stroll through the famous Plaka and Monastiraki areas. As evening falls we will watch the Acropolis light up from a nearby rooftop bar and enjoy a welcome beverage. Next day, some may start the morning early with an option to visit the Acropolis with a local guide. Later, the group will gather for class with Angela and explore capturing this historic, exciting city. In the afternoon we transfer to Port of Piraeus for our ferry to the Island of Amorgos.

Amorgos (6 nights)

Upon arrival in Amorgos, your watercolor workshop in Greece will transfer to our family-operated beach front hotel for 6 days of seaside relaxation. Your room, only steps from the Aegean Sea, awaits. Amorgos is a little-developed island with ancient towns spilling down the mountainside and an 11th century monastery offering a special destination. Our resort amenities include an outdoor pool, a casual restaurant overlooking the sea, free snorkel gear, and beach towels and lounges.

Highlights of our morning walks and daily excursions include the villages of Chora, Lagada, Tholaria and Aegiali. Each day we will have an on-site class inspired by the location we visit. Afternoons are free to wander the towns, swim or lay out at the beach. There will also be casual sketchbook sessions to further develop your travel journal.

A virtual tour of Amorgos we created for Travel+Leisure may be viewed here.)

Naxos (2 nights)

After Amorgos, a ferry carries us to Naxos for two nights at our hotel in the historic center. There Angela will lead a class within the ancient walls of the Venetian castle. Afterward, you have time to wander the old town and harbor filled with shops and restaurants. Naxos is the greenest island in the Cyclades with impressively high mountains and fertile valleys. Here there are beaches that are among the most beautiful in Greece.

The next day we visit the charming inland village of Chalki. Formerly the capital of the island, it hosts wonderful artisan shops and a kitron distillery (if you’d like to try the local spirit). After class, join our countryside walk along cobbled lanes and stacked-stone walls, through ancient olive orchards and verdant open fields.

Santorini (3 nights)

If your vision of Greece includes whitewashed buildings adorned with graceful blue domes, nestled atop sheer cliffs, and overlooking the bluest blue of the Aegean – you have dreamed of Santorini. Famous for remarkable views, sunsets over its flooded caldera, and world class restaurants and galleries, Santorini has a unique and stunning beauty. Each day brings new inspiration for Angela’s on-site classes.

On our watercolor workshop in Greece we will explore the cities of Fira and Oia. For the ambitious, there is an option to traverse the island’s caldera ridge to the charming village of Firostefani. On another day we’ll tour the fascinating Minoan site of Akrotiri, an ancient city frozen in time by one of the largest volcanic eruptions in history. It is one of the most important archaeological sites in Greece. Then, see the island from a new point of view from our private catamaran. This optional cruise through the caldera is a vacation highlight for many guests.

Finally, it will be time to say goodbye. We will gather for our farewell dinner in a taverna that has been handed down through generations of family. As we recall the best moments of our  watercolor workshop in Greece, we will toast to safe travels and adventures to come. The final day is departures.

Solo travelers and single supplements

For our guests who are traveling solo... We offer a single supplement for an additional fee if you wish to guarantee a private room.

You may share a twin room with another trip participant of the same sex (Roomshare) if you do not request a private room. When you sign up, if no Roomshare is available, a 50% single supplement will be included on your invoice due at final payment. However, if a roommate is found before your trip departs, you will be matched and the single supplement will be removed or refunded.

A single supplement guarantees a private room. Whenever possible singles will be placed in the same room type as our double or twin rooms.

Twin / Double Rooms

Please be aware twin beds in Europe may have very little or no space between beds. Also, instead of a king or queen mattress, double beds are often adjoining twin mattresses secured together and made with double bedding.

Fitness

Walking is a part of this program. It is both a means of visiting locations and a way to immerse yourself in a place. Our scheduled walks are usually 1-2 hours long at a casual pace. We provide a general description of our walks here. It is your responsibility to know your own physical and medical condition with respect to the advisability of participating in a chosen trip. We suggest you prepare by doing at least 1 hour of walking several times per week, and a longer walk at least once per week. Ideally, include walks with elevation change and stairs. (There are always stairs.)

As with any exercise program, we recommend you consult with your physician prior to your arrival regarding the suitability of a walking tour.

Some of our guests find trekking poles helpful on steep or uneven terrain. In Europe they are quite common. Before using them on a vacation, please practice at home. We strongly advise you get comfortable using trekking  poles on familiar paths first.

For additional information on these topics and more, please see our FAQ page.

Where in the World?

Your Art Walk sketchbook travel journal vacation begins in Athens, Greece. We then spend most of our time island hopping through the Cyclades. The Cyclades is a group of Greek islands southeast of the mainland in the Aegean Sea. It is a perfect place for a walking vacation. The islands are known for their beaches, ancient sites, rugged landscapes and traditional blue-and-white stucco towns overlooking the sea.

Airport Information

The Athens International Airport  is the entry airport for our Greece sketchbook travel journal vacation. It is located approximately a 40-50 minutes drive from our hotel.

At the end of the tour, the most convenient departure is from the Santorini Airport. It is located about 10 minutes from our hotel.

All things being equal, for our itinerary it is preferred to book flights into Athens and out of Santorini. Alternatively, if you reserve roundtrip flights between your home airport and Athens, for your departure a separate flight from Santorini to Athens may be booked. If that is the case, we advise leaving at least 3 hours between landing in Athens and departing on your international flight.
